Pentax Serial Number Database

Oct 20, 2008. In 1977, Pentax introduced two compact 35mm SLRs, the MX and the ME. The Olympus OM-1, presented in 1972, had introduced a new trend for compactness in SLR cameras. The Pentax ME was an aperture priority automatic camera, with an electronic focal plane shutter from 8s to 1/1000, synchronized at 1/100. The shutter curtains were metal and had a vertical movement. There was no shutter dial,. The Pentax K1000 (originally marked the Asahi Pentax K1000) is an interchangeable lens, 35 mm film, single-lens reflex (SLR) camera, manufactured by Asahi Optical Co., Ltd. From 1976 to 1997, originally in Japan. Except of the first series, where I have used the mentioned source, I've done the production number assessment by myself using the average distance method. In the Pentax case that was comparably easy as www.pentaxforums.com is running a serial number database for almost every Pentax SLR. Based on this here is a table of my results.

Hello everybody..
My father left me this Camera, can i retrieve the build year from serialnumber?
Thanks
Fabio
I doubt it Pentax don't follow any order with SN's.
The SP was produced from 1964 and the SPII from 1971. Yours could well be an early one from say 64-67 because I've seen higher SN's
See this site for the different models..

From here would suggest some time in 1965/66, see SNs 1038632 and 1219471 with given dates of May 1965 and August 1966 respectively at these links:

I bought my Pentax Spotmatic in July 1965 with the serial no 1052405. However, I bought it in the USA and it is branded 'Honeywell Pentax' (Honeywell had the exclusive franchise for Spotmatics then). I don't know if these US branded ones had a different series of numbering, although it would seem to be consistent with Mike's numbers and dates.

My SP is s/n 1028439 with an ASA range of 10-800, and 231 engraved on the bottom plate which as far as I can tell makes it a version 1 from the original 1964 manufacturing campaign. SP serial numbers started at 1000001. Version 2 SPs were I think manufactured in several campaigns from 1965-1973 with ASA range of 20-1600, with 23102 engraved on the bottom plate. 121xxxx could be 1967-8. Hope this helps. Manufacturers commonly use a serial number to uniquely identify a camera lens or body. Knowledge of these numbers may allow the dating of the specific item. This page provides known serial number and date sequences for cameras, lenses and shutters.

On shutters

Camera makers frequently made sure that the serial number of the shutter was out of sight by judiciously orienting the shutter casing. The use of a speculum (dentist's mirror) allows to read the number even if it is facing the camera's folding bed.
